Pregnancy can bring excitement, uncertainty, physical discomfort, and plenty of questions—sometimes all in the same day. If you’re considering prenatal acupuncture, you may be wondering what happens during an appointment, how you’ll get comfortable, or what the needles feel like.

At Lisa Meyerson Acupuncture in Evanston, your first visit begins with a conversation. There’s space to ask questions, share concerns, and discuss care that fits your circumstances.

We Start By Listening

Before beginning treatment, we’ll talk about your pregnancy, health history, and what brought you in. You don’t need to arrive with everything neatly organized or know exactly what to ask.

We may discuss:

  • How far along you are and how your pregnancy has been progressing.
  • Symptoms or discomforts you’d like to address.
  • Sleep, energy, stress, and daily routines.
  • Medications, prenatal vitamins, herbs, and other supplements.
  • Relevant findings or recommendations from your obstetrician or midwife.
  • Previous experiences with acupuncture, including any concerns about needles.

Please mention any pregnancy complications, bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medications, or history of fainting with needles. These details help me understand your needs and make appropriate treatment recommendations.

A Collaborative Approach To Your Pregnancy Care

Prenatal acupuncture brings another area of clinical expertise to your pregnancy care. My role includes assessing whether acupuncture is appropriate for you, tailoring treatment to your needs, and considering how medications, herbs, and supplements may affect your care.

We’ll review what you’re taking together, including potential interactions and whether products are appropriate during pregnancy. Bringing a complete list, including over-the-counter products, helps make that conversation more useful.

When coordination with your obstetrician, midwife, pharmacist, or another clinician would be helpful, we can discuss it together. The goal is thoughtful, well-informed care that draws on each practitioner’s expertise.

Acupuncture does not replace prenatal monitoring or urgent medical assessment of new, severe, or concerning symptoms.

We Make Room For Your Comfort

Getting comfortable can become more challenging as pregnancy progresses. Tell me what feels good and what doesn’t—you don’t need to stay in an uncomfortable position to finish a treatment.

Depending on your stage of pregnancy and individual needs, we can discuss side-lying or supported, semi-reclined positioning. Pillows and adjustments can help accommodate your changing body.

You can ask to pause, change position, or end treatment at any time. Your comfort and consent remain part of the conversation throughout the visit.

What Do The Needles Feel Like?

Acupuncture uses fine needles placed at selected points on the body. You might notice a brief pinch, a mild ache, or little sensation at all. Experiences vary.

Tell me if anything feels sharp, painful, or uncomfortable so I can adjust or remove the needle. If needles make you nervous, please say so—we can talk through the process before deciding how to proceed.

I use sterile, single-use needles. We’ll discuss possible side effects, such as temporary soreness or bruising, and any considerations specific to you before treatment.

Care That Adapts To Your Pregnancy

Your needs can change throughout pregnancy, and your acupuncture care should reflect that. At each visit, we’ll talk about how you’re feeling and adjust your treatment and positioning with your comfort in mind.

My extensive studies with prenatal experts Laura Erlich and Deb Davies inform my approach. I bring that training into our work together, along with careful attention to your health history and the progression of your pregnancy.

You’ll have space to ask questions, understand what I’m recommending, and decide what feels right for you.

How To Prepare For Your Appointment

Wear comfortable clothing that can be adjusted easily, and bring your medication and supplement list. Relevant prenatal records or information about pregnancy complications can also be helpful.

Follow your usual eating and drinking routine unless you have specific medical instructions. If nausea, fatigue, or mobility makes appointments difficult, contact me beforehand so we can discuss your needs.

There’s no special preparation you need to get “right.” The appointment is an opportunity to meet you where you are.

What Happens After The First Visit?

Before you leave, we’ll discuss how the session felt, what we’re working toward, and whether follow-up care makes sense.

We’ll choose a schedule that fits your needs, response, and budget, then reassess as your pregnancy progresses and your circumstances change.

At future visits, let me know about changes in symptoms, medications, supplements, or your pregnancy. Those updates help keep your care responsive and individualized.
