People enjoying a sunny summer day at a Chicago beach along Lake Michigan.

Summer is often our favorite season. The days are longer, the weather invites us outdoors, and our calendars quickly fill with vacations, family gatherings, weddings, festivals, beach days, and neighborhood events.

Ironically, all of those joyful experiences can leave us feeling anything but refreshed.

If you've noticed that you're more tired, anxious, or overwhelmed during the summer months, you're not alone. As an acupuncturist in Evanston, I often see patients who expect to feel energized by summer but instead find themselves struggling with stress, poor sleep, headaches, muscle tension, or simply feeling "off."

Traditional Chinese Medicine offers an interesting perspective on why this happens—and how acupuncture can help.kenta-kikuchi-1C55VIfJSuQ-unsplash

Summer and the Heart in Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each season is connected to an organ system. Summer is associated with the Heart, which governs circulation, emotional well-being, sleep, and mental clarity.

The emotion connected to the Heart is joy.

That may sound surprising, but TCM teaches that balance is everything. Joy nourishes the Heart—but too much stimulation, excitement, or constant activity can leave the Heart depleted.

You don't have to be experiencing major stress for your nervous system to become overwhelmed.

Even positive experiences can add up.

Signs Your Body May Need a Reset

Many of my patients come in during the summer with symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Feeling mentally scattered or overstimulated
  • Increased anxiety or irritability
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Fatigue despite getting enough sleep
  • Feeling like they "need a vacation from their vacation"

These symptoms often improve when we give the body an opportunity to slow down and regulate.

How Acupuncture Supports Summer Wellness

Acupuncture encourages your body to return to balance.

Depending on your unique needs, treatment may help calm the nervous system, improve sleep, ease headaches, reduce seasonal allergy symptoms, support hormone balance, and provide natural support for fertility and pregnancy.

Every treatment is personalized because no two people experience stress—or healing—in exactly the same way.

Sometimes the Best Medicine Is Rest

One of my favorite lessons from Chinese medicine is that rest isn't the opposite of productivity or joy.

It protects both.

You don't have to attend every gathering or fill every free evening to have a meaningful summer. Sometimes leaving one evening completely unscheduled is exactly what your Heart—and your nervous system—need.

Small moments matter:

  • A quiet walk along the Evanston lakefront
  • Reading on your porch
  • Sitting in the garden with your morning coffee
  • Turning your phone off for an hour
  • Taking a few slow, deep breaths before your next commitment

These simple practices help restore balance just as much as they create space for joy.

Caring for Your Health This Summer

One of the things I love most about acupuncture is that it looks at the whole person—not just a list of symptoms.

Whether you're navigating stress, trouble sleeping, seasonal allergies, fertility care, hormone changes, or simply feeling like your body needs a reset, treatment is always tailored to your individual needs.

My goal is to help you feel healthier, more resilient, and better able to enjoy everything this season has to offer.
