When you’re trying to conceive, timing can begin to shape everything: tracking your cycle, scheduling appointments, waiting for results, and deciding what to try next. Adding acupuncture may bring another question: When should I start?
There isn’t one starting point that fits everyone. You might be planning ahead, trying to conceive, or preparing for IUI or IVF. The first step is a conversation about where you are, what support you’re seeking, and how acupuncture might fit alongside your medical care.
Before You Begin Trying To Conceive
If you’re planning a pregnancy, you can schedule a consultation before you begin trying. This gives us time to discuss your health history, menstrual patterns, sleep, stress, medications, and goals.
In my practice, I want to understand the person behind the appointment. What feels manageable right now? What feels overwhelming? What would you like support with?
Starting ahead of time can give you room to explore whether acupuncture feels helpful to you. It should not become a prerequisite for trying to conceive or a reason to postpone medical care.
While You’re Trying To Conceive
You don’t need a fertility diagnosis to ask about acupuncture. You may simply want a quiet space to pause, discuss your concerns, and receive individualized care during an uncertain time.
People often wonder whether they need to schedule around ovulation or a particular cycle day. We can discuss your cycle when planning appointments, but I don’t want scheduling to become another source of pressure.
Your plan should make room for your work, relationships, budget, and everyday life.
When Preparing For IUI Or IVF
If you’re preparing for fertility treatment, bring your treatment calendar and your clinic’s instructions to our conversation. Let your fertility team know you’re considering acupuncture, too.
It’s important to distinguish support for your wellbeing from claims about pregnancy outcomes. Acupuncture should not be presented as a proven way to guarantee implantation, pregnancy, or a live birth. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority advises patients to question claims that complementary therapies improve their chances of having a baby and to discuss these therapies with their fertility clinician. We can discuss whether appointments fit comfortably around your treatment schedule, with your fertility team’s recommendations guiding your medical care.
What If Your Treatment Cycle Has Already Started?
You can still reach out with questions.
You don’t need to apologize for not contacting me earlier or squeeze extra appointments into an already demanding week. We’ll start by discussing your current circumstances and whether adding acupuncture makes sense for you.
My goal is to help you make a thoughtful choice without adding another obligation to your calendar.
How Often Should You Come?
I recommend discussing frequency after an initial assessment rather than committing everyone to the same schedule.
We’ll consider your goals, medical treatment schedule, comfort, availability, and budget. We can then reassess how appointments are fitting into your life and whether you find them worthwhile.
You should feel comfortable asking what a recommendation is intended to address and discussing a schedule you can realistically maintain.
When Should You Seek A Fertility Evaluation?
Acupuncture should not delay a medical fertility evaluation.
For people having regular, unprotected intercourse without known fertility concerns, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine generally recommends evaluation after:
- 12 months when the person trying to become pregnant is under 35.
- Six months at age 35 or older.
- More promptly over age 40.
Earlier evaluation may be appropriate with irregular or absent periods, suspected endometriosis, known reproductive concerns, or other relevant medical history. People who need donor sperm or other assistance to conceive can seek guidance without waiting through these timelines. ASRM
