There’s a constant stream of information, images, and stories coming at us from all directions. Many of us are trying to stay informed, to care, to bear witness. And even when that engagement feels important and aligned…
Your body is still the place where all of that lands.
In my acupuncture practice, I’ve been seeing a very consistent pattern lately. People aren’t just “stressed.” They’re carrying something heavier and harder to name.
It shows up physically.
Tight shoulders and neck that don’t quite release
Sleep that feels shallow or disrupted
Digestion that’s suddenly off
A sense of being wired and exhausted at the same time
This isn’t random. And it’s not a personal failing.
It’s your nervous system doing its best to process more input than it was designed for.
Your Body Is Not Separate From the World
In Chinese medicine, we don’t separate the external environment from what’s happening internally.
The same way seasonal changes affect your body, so does the emotional and energetic climate around you.
When there is a lot of intensity, instability, or grief in the world, it can contribute to what we call Qi stagnation. Things don’t move as smoothly. Systems that normally regulate themselves start to feel stuck or dysregulated.
This is especially true in the spring, which is associated with the Liver system. The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi, emotion, and blood.
When that flow is disrupted, you might feel:
- Irritable or easily overwhelmed
- Physically tense
- Mentally restless but unfocused
- Out of sync with your usual rhythms
This is not something you can fix by pushing harder.
Why “Pushing Through” Doesn’t Work
A lot of people respond to this kind of feeling by trying to override it.
More discipline. More productivity. A cleanse. A reset. A plan to “get back on track.”
But when your nervous system is already overloaded, adding more pressure often makes things worse.
From a Chinese medicine perspective, what your body needs is not force.
It needs regulation.
That means:
- Supporting digestion rather than restricting it
- Encouraging gentle movement instead of intense exertion
- Creating moments of rest instead of constant output
It’s less about doing more, and more about doing what helps your system come back into balance.
How Acupuncture Helps You Process, Not Avoid
Acupuncture doesn’t remove what’s happening in the world.
What it does is help your body process it differently.
By working with the nervous system and the flow of Qi, acupuncture can:
- Downregulate the stress response
- Improve sleep quality
- Release physical tension
- Support emotional processing
- Restore a sense of internal steadiness
Patients often tell me that after a session, they don’t feel disconnected or numb. They feel more themselves. More able to think clearly, rest deeply, and respond rather than react.
That’s the goal.
Not disengagement.
Not overwhelm.
But capacity.
Simple Ways to Support Yourself Right Now
In addition to acupuncture, small daily practices can make a meaningful difference.
Acupressure
- ST36 (below the knee): supports energy and digestion
- LV3 (top of the foot): helps move stuck energy and ease tension
Press each point for 1–2 minutes with slow breathing.
Food
- Focus on warm, easy-to-digest meals
- Include lightly cooked greens and a bit of bitterness (like arugula or dandelion)
- Avoid extremes or restrictive eating
Herbal support
- Bao He Wan may be helpful when digestion feels heavy or stuck
(As always, herbs should be matched to the individual.)
You Don’t Need to Shut It All Off
One of the most common questions I hear is some version of:
“Do I just need to stop paying attention to everything?”
And the answer is no.
Caring about the world and taking care of your body are not opposing forces.
In fact, they depend on each other.
If your system is constantly overwhelmed, it becomes much harder to stay present, think clearly, and act in ways that are aligned with your values.
Taking care of your body is what makes engagement sustainable.
You Don’t Need a Cleanse. You Need Support.
This is something I’ve been saying a lot lately, because it’s true.
Especially right now.
Your body is not a problem to fix. It’s a system trying to adapt to a complex and demanding environment.
When you support it, things start to shift.
Sleep deepens.
Tension softens.
Digestion steadies.
And you feel more like yourself again.
If you’ve been feeling the weight of everything lately, you’re not alone.
And you don’t have to carry it without support.
