Friday marked the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year—a time of light, growth, and connection. In East Asian medicine, this season is governed by the Heart and Small Intestine, the Fire element, and the emotion of joy. The Heart is known as the Emperor—it governs consciousness, compassion, and our connection to one another.

But how can we fully embrace joy and connection in a world so flooded with conflict?

As we honor this turning point in the year, we cannot ignore the heat of the world around us—wars that rage on in Gaza, Israel, Syria, Sudan, Ukraine, Yemen, Lebanon, Congo, and now Iran. The fire of summer reminds us of warmth and illumination—but fire out of balance becomes destruction.

In Chinese medicine, imbalance in the Fire element can show up as anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, and heartbreak. On a collective level, the world is experiencing a spiritual heart disturbance—disconnection, cruelty, and collapse of empathy.

But the same principles that guide us in healing individual bodies can help us imagine global healing: balance, rhythm, compassion, and restoration.

Acupuncture helps restore shen—the spirit of the Heart—within individuals. And each time we choose connection over division, care over apathy, we participate in that larger restoration.

If you are carrying grief, rage, or exhaustion in your body in response to the world—please know you don’t have to hold it alone.

This solstice, may we commit to healing the heart—in ourselves and in the world.
